Middle School History-January/February 2013

6th Grade:
We will be studying Ancient India, and China over the next 6 weeks...This will include Buddhism/Hinduism, the Four Nobel Truths, The Eight-Fold Path, the geography of India(including a map test of Asia).  Additionally, we will discuss/learn how and why the "Great Wall" of China was built.  Students will discover some interesting facts about Confusionism, and China's advanced culture. 

Tests:
Students will be tested after chapter readings(quizes-10 or fewer questions), and at the end of the Unit-(exams of 25-50 questions; including short answer and essay questions). 

Projects:
Students will work on a "Glogster" poster(an electronic poster completed in their Computer class).

7th Grade:
Students will learn about China, Japan in Jan/Feb.  Key topics will be:  Buddhism, The unification of China's territories, the influence and reasons for ending China's exploration of the world.  When students learn about Japan, they will be exposed to the martial arts(including Sumo wrestling), the culture of the Samurai(including a viewing of an edited version of "The Last Samurai"-a student favorite).
Tests:
There will be several reading quizes(10 or fewer questions).  Our "Unit" exam will cover both China and Japan. 

Projects: there are no projects planned at this time, but I may assign a "Glogster" virtual poster assignment to be completed in "Computer" class

8th Grade:
Students will examine the "New Republic" of the USA(1800-1850);  including our first few presidents, War of 1812, Andrew Jackson's policies towards the Native Americans, and economical issues that lead towards the conflict w/in the practice of slavery. 

Tests:
We will have reading quizes after each chapter assigned; Unit exams will commence when we finish Chapters 5-7/8.
Projects:
We may complete a "Glogster" project but that would be coordinated w/ the students' Computer class.

MONTH AT A GLANCE-Oct/Nov

ANCIENT HISTORY(OCT/NOV):
6th grade students will continue to learn about Egypt's unique civilization.  The students seem very intrigued with the process of mummification, and the culture of the Egyptians.  We will spend Oct. 31st discussing the history of Halloween!

PROJECTS: Students have been working on and are near completion of their "Glogster" reports;  this is a combined computer/history project-Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy who is guiding the students through this new project.

TESTS:  there will be a unit exam about Egypt/Kush in Early November.


MEDIEVAL HISTORY(Oct/Nov):
7th grade students have completed their unit on Islam and are now working on their unit about Medieval Africa.  I have just described to the students, how they will have a major project due in Dec.(more to follow at a later date).

TESTS:  we will have a unit exam on Africa in November.
 
PROJECTS: Students have been working on and are near completion of their "Glogster" reports;  this is a combined computer/history project-Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy who is guiding the students through this new project.


US HISTORY(Oct/Nov):
8th grade
Students are learning about the US Constitution-a very demanding unit of 10 weeks!  Mr. Scott, a former Federal prosecutor, and GHS parent was kind enough to give a 3 day lesson to the students-it was "awesome"(an actual student's words)-Thank you Mr. Scott.  We will continue to examine the intricasies of our Constitution and how the Federal Government is "supposed" to work.  We will exam actual court cases and let the students be the judge.
TESTS:  there will be several small vocabulary quizes; but the major Constituion test(135 pts+) will be in December. 
 
PROJECTS: Students have been working on and are near completion of their "Glogster" reports;  this is a combined computer/history project-Thank you to Mrs. Kennedy who is guiding the students through this new project.
