Hands4Hope - Youth Making A Difference will be hosting their third semi-annual Food Bank Blitz on Sunday, March 21, 2010, from 10am to 6pm at grocery stores from Placerville to Orangevale. Volunteers will be at these stores collecting donations of food, gift cards, and cash. All food donations in El Dorado County will go to the El Dorado County Food Bank and donations from Folsom to Orangevale will go to the Twin Lakes Food Bank in Folsom. Cash and gift card donations will be split between the food banks and Hands4Hope outreach programs.
Volunteers for our March 2009 Food Bank Blitz collected 2,680 pounds of food and over $6,000 in cash and gift card donations in one day. Our goal is to increase both these numbers by 15%. To do this we need 200 volunteers to work a two-hour shift (or more if they choose). To register to volunteer for this event, go to www.hands4hopeyouth.org . A wonderful article by Lynn Machon, entitled "Golden Hills School: Cards for the Troops" appeared in the Winter 2009 edition of Serrano El Dorado magazine. The article highlights the many community service contributions of our GHS kids and our staff who guide them. We thank Serrano El Dorado magazine for the recognition of our great kids, of whom, as always, we couldn't be prouder.
Serrano El Dorado magazine is available at many local business establishments. We've posted a copy of the article on this site for your enjoyment. |

Community Service News 2009-2010
"Be the Change You Want to See In the World" (Gandhi)
We are looking forward to a productive and purposeful year of service to our school and our community. We have many exciting service opportunities for our students this year, and are looking forward to working together as a community to serve within GHS and the greater community as well.
Students Helping at GHS Many of our Middle School Students are helping in the elementary classrooms and assisting around the school as a whole. Students are helping with younger children, working with teachers, assisting in the computer lab, assisting the front office and helping to keep the GHS campus clean. It is always wonderful to have our middle school students working with our younger students. The students enjoy each other and are able to build memorable friendships with one another. Recycling Program We are currently working on establishing a school wide Recycling Program. Please ask your children about the special recycling cans around the school. Teachers and Middle School Community Service Students will be helping to educate the students about the importance of recycling and the difference each person makes in recognizing their part in environmental responsibility. Mr. Shields is teaching them a special song and they will sing it at our next "Rising Star" Character Assembly. Parents are always welcome! Thank You to all our GHS students, teachers and staff that are positively promoting and participating in this important project.
Senior Home Visits The Middle School Community Service students have contacted and arranged for our Community Service students to visit a senior residence in the area. We plan to begin this by mid to late September. Look for more news and pictures on this event.
KCRA Kids Can Food Drive October 12 to November 20, 2009: We will be participating in the KCRA Kids Can Food Drive again this year. Starting October 12, 2009 look for our Kindergarten and third grade buddy classes to be out front with their shopping baskets collecting all those non-perishable food items each morning. The Middle School Community Service Students will also be there to help unload those heavy items. We will be donating all the items to the El Dorado County Food Bank. This is a great way to help our community, and to help our children understand the purpose of the food drive and foster an awareness and desire to help others in need. This will afford all classes an opportunity to participate and even the youngest students to feel a sense of contribution.
I look forward to a great year of our GHS Community working together to make each day one of purpose and wonder. Please remember to visit this site for news and updates on our Community Service Activities. |
