Saludos A Todos-Por Fin- In April we finished up several older units, such as food, clothing, animals, etc... Congratulations to the 8th Graders!!! The Middle School classes have almost completed the Spanish curriculum for the year and I want to thank you all and the students for making my first year at GHS so successful! Muchas gracias a todos. 8th Grade: They have a Hispanic Biography due on May 7th and they can turn it in earlier if they wish! We will start the oral presentations on May 6th and continue on into next week as part of their project. 8th Grade is working on a Food Unit as our last theme unit and ask them to name fruits and vegetables. Even opening the refrigerator and have them name things in Spanish would be helpful for their food vocabulary memorization. We will be having a comprehensive Final during Finals Week 5/17-5/21 and 8th Grade Grades are due 5/21/2010. 7th Grade: They are studying Animals/Environment in PAP/C.13 p.422-423 and we are learning both domestic and wild animals. 7th Grade had a fantastic "Cinco de Mayo" fiesta thanks to Mrs. Franklin for her delicious enchiladas and tacos!!! The 7th Graders invited Mrs. Durante's 8th Graders over to the fiesta after their test!! Thank you Mrs. Durante and Mrs.Franklin again!!! The 7th Graders will be having a comprehensive final with an oral test during Finals Week and there will be questions over all the units we studied this year. 6th Grade: They are learning a food unit also from PAP/C. 4 p.122-123, 126-127, and table settings from C.12p.384-385, 388-389 for our final Spanish theme unit. The class will be identifying fake foods on plates, food sheets of twenty items, how to set a table, sample menus and recipes. During Final Week they will have an oral final and a comprehensive written final over the units we covered in class this year. Grade 5 all received 100% on their Food Test #3 and Congratulations to them!!! We are doing a unit on Media, Television, Movies and Commercials and the different types of media. They will also write a movie review and a short book review as part of the curriculum. They will have a comprehensive final over what they learned all year during Finals Week. Grade 4 finished their Media Unit and now are beginning a shorter Food Unit than the 6th and 8th graders are learning. We are learning the basic Spanish names for fruits, vegetables and food. They will have a short final over all the material we have covered this year during Finals Week: May 17-21. Grade 3 finally finished La Casa/The House and vocabulary; they will be starting a Media Unit like Grade 5 as our final theme unit. Parents should receive the ABC book after 5/8/10 since we are doing the last letters of Y and Z this week! I will bind these and send them home with the students so they can study their Spanish vocabulary this summer. Grade 2 is beginning a unit on Sports and what Sports they like to play at school; we finished our unit on Animals/Science and we want to thank Mrs.Colgan for bringing in Mexican Pan Dulce(Sweet breads) to class for Cinco de Mayo!! Gracias!!!!!!!! Grade 1 is finishing learning classroom objects and will finish the year with the house vocabulary and terms. We have finished their ABC Book and I will be sending that home with them to study over the summer. Grade K is working on shapes and forms in vocabulary, such as circles, triangles, ovals and other shapes in Spanish. We will end the year working on things in their room and house. The vocabulary to study will be la casa, el cuarto, los juguetes, mi dormitorio, la puerta, la ventana, and la cama.(The house, room, toys, my bedroom, the door, the windor and the bed.) Thanks to all of the parents and students who have made my first year at GHS so successful and fun!!! I truly appreciated all of your kind support and contributions during the school year!!! Muchas gracias y hasta la vista--K.Maupin |

¡Vamos a celebrar Día de los Muertos! Let’s celebrate Day of the Dead. Niños (kids), you can make the traditional bread (Pan de muerto or Dead Bread) with your padres (parents). I have listed the ingredients below in English and in Spanish.
Ingredients/Ingredientes:
1/2 cup butter/mantequilla
1/2 cup milk/leche (soy milk can be substituted)
1/2 cup water/agua
5 to 5-1/2 cups flour/harina
2 packages dry yeast/levadura
1 teaspoon salt/sal
1 tablespoon whole anise seed/semilla de anís
1/2 cup sugar/azúcar
4 eggs/huevos
In a sauce pan over medium flame, heat the butter, milk and water until very warm but not boiling.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups flour, yeast, salt, anise seed and sugar. Beat in the warm liquid until well combined. Add the eggs and beat in another 1 cup of flour. Continue adding more flour until dough is soft but not sticky. Knead on lightly floured board for ten minutes until smooth and elastic or use a professional grade mixer.
Lightly grease a bowl and place dough in it, cover with plastic wrap and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1-1/2 hours. Punch the dough down and shape into 3 round loaves. Decorate the tops of the loaves with dough in the shapes of bones or skeletons. Let these loaves rise for 1 hour.
Bake in a preheated 350 F degree oven for 15 - 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for at least 5 minutes before consuming bread that is no longer living. Enjoy eating your “dead bread”. ¡Feliz Día de los Muertos (el 2 de noviembre)!
