8th Grade-US HISTORY:
Students have settled in and we are building the foundation(through notes/discussion/video clips) as to how and why the 13 colonies were established.  Students are learning how through "salutary neglect", the desire for colonial goods-e.g. tobacco, corn, etc., and the desire for self-government, that the colonies rebelled.; We will have one project this month, where the students create their own colony.
7th Grade-Medieval HISTORY:
The students have become used to my routines and are working well towards understanding the importance of the Byzantine Empire and how Christianity spread.  We will move onto the impact of a "new" Medieval religion-Islam.  Students will see how there is a connection betweek the spread of Islam(and other religions) and affected cultures-including North Africa, Europe, and Asia Minor.  Students may have one in class project to demonstrate knowledge learned is being processed completely.
6th Grade-Ancient HISTORY:
The sixth graders are doing an excellent job with learning about early man and how scientists and historians believe they "evolved" into the first civilizations; we are now studying about Mesopotamia.  Students will have two projects this month:  a)  Time capsule-where they build their own time capsule in class.  b)  they will create their own ancient city-state.  Please remind your student that homework is due on time or there is a loss of points; if its more than two days late it is a "zero".  Thank you for your support!

Mr. Cleveland
Ancient, Medieval & US History
2010/2011

Dear Students (& Parents):

Please be sure to have the  items listed below for the first day of my class, so that you will be better prepared for daily assignments; many of these items will be required for your other classes, e.g. student planner, thus you do not have to buy a special item just for my class.  Being organized is one of the most important life skills that I can teach you.
  1. 3 ring binder (either a separate one -3" for History, or the case version where the student creates a specific area for History).
  2. Spiral Notebook - THIS IS MANDATORY for each student's "History Journal" - needed for the first day of class!
  3. MAP - This is optional, but it would be nice to have a laminated map (8"x11") as indicated below.  Check Target/Walmart or a small office supply store as I didn't find any online at Staples or Office Depot
    • Ancient & Medieval History:  World Map
    • 8th Graders:  US Map
  4. GHS Student Planner (assignments and earned points should be kept here.
  5. Pens: Black and Navy Blue ONLY
  6. #2 Pencils ONLY
  7. Lined paper
  8. Ruler (small is okay) there are ones that have holes that can be secured in the rings of the binder)
  9. 3 hole punch that fits in the binder
  10. Binder Tabs that separate each section within the binder (e.g. "Notes" section, "Syllabus", "Map" section, "Returned Work/Tests" section, "Vocabulary" section etc.)
  11. Highlighter (Very Important Item):  Color doesn't matter
  12. Pencil bag or box:  Something in which to hold all of the writing utensils/daily supplies
  13. Small Stapler - to fit in item #12 above (bag/box)
  14. Colored markers/pencils, glitter glue/art supplies (these are optional but very handy)
NOTE:  If your student does not use a "GHS Planner", then they should keep an "assignment log" and "Grade Tracking Sheet".  Both of these forms available at anytime for no charge from Mr. Cleveland.
